Wainwright Coast to coast walk St Bega statue at St Bees

detailed map of day's walk

St. Bees
Statue of Saint Bega on the outskirts of St. Bees village.

The legend of St Bega tells of an Irish Princess called Bega, escaping across the Irish Sea from an enforced marriage, landing here and building a nunnery on land which the local landowner said she could have if it was covered by snow - on midsummer day.  The statue shows St Bega after landing at St Bees in her coracle boat.
